This Workpackage will focus, for the remaining period of activity of the ERA-Pilot project, on developing an in-depth analysis of the research interests and corresponding funding sources of the QIPC communities outside Europe. For this purpose an overview of the most relevant groups active within the field of QIPC beyond Europe and of international activities including funding agencies, type of funding, and projects will be elaborated. By means of traceable criteria (analysis of publications, quotations, ...) the activities within research areas outside Europe will be investigated.
The approach towards this goal will be divided into three steps: first, a field overview investigation will be accomplished collecting the relevant data on key players and their research interest. Second, the scientific groups active within the area of QIST in different non-European countries, will be contacted directly and asked to fill a questionnaire. All efforts will be taken in order to gain the confidence of the research groups (see the detailed implementation plan). Finally, an informal meeting will be tentatively organized (coordinating with the WP8 of the QUROPE coordination action) in order to bring the key players together and to discuss collaboration and world-wide integration of QIPC research activities.
Finally for the purpose of international cooperation and collaboration the Quantiki.net website will be established as a central resource for the QIPC scientific community. This website will be a reliable source of information for scientists from all over the world. Users will be strongly encouraged to cooperate in the development and enhancement of its content, in a similar spirit of the Wikipedia.
WP2 will be led by OAW (Austria) with the assistance of Vladimir Buzek from BRA (Slovakia), Daniel Loss from Basel and Artur Ekert UOXF.DJ (United Kingdom). The new partners involved in the last phase of this WP have well developed structural connections with leading international QIPC Centers. Moreover, D. Loss and A. Ekert are the leaders of WP8 ("International contacts between researchers communities in Europe and overseas") of the coordination action QUROPE: this will ensure that the WP2 results will be kept up to date and improved beyond the natural expiration date of the ERA project.
This Workpackage will execute a kind of international analysis of the QIST-situation and QIST bench-marking.
For this purpose an overview of the most relevant groups active within the field of QIST beyond Europe and of international activities including funding agencies, type of funding, and projects will be elaborated. By means of traceable criteria (analysis of publications, quotations, ...) it will be investigated, in which fields according to the QIST classification European research groups are on top of the world. This job shall result in an analysis of strengths and weaknesses of European research within QIST and of European resources.
One goal of WP2 is to write a list of relevant QIST-topics that might lead to scientific and technological leadership within broader areas and to derive some “general recommendations” in which QIST-fields the efforts have to be intensified in order to achieve or to keep international leadership; especially with respect to future applications and with respect to the foundation of a future “quantum industry”.
Possible fields for targeted basic research shall be identified.
WP2(first year) will be led by Vladimir Buzek from BRA (Slovakia).
